Frequently Asked Questions for Bridal Alterations

  • How long before my wedding should I start alterations?

It is recommended that alterations start 2 to 3 months in advance, as most gowns will need 3-5 fittings. If you would like sleeves added/made plan to have 4-9 fittings. It is recommended to get scheduled once you purchase your gown as once my calendar fills up I stop taking new appointments.

  • How much will alterations cost?

The best way to get an accurate estimate is to schedule a consultation appointment. There are many factors that determine how many labour hours go into making your dress fit just right. How many seams are being touched, how many layers of hem need to be shortened, what type of bustle works best with your dress, if there is lace/beading that needs to be lifted and reset. My bridal rate is $120 an hour, brides who work with me average between $900-$1500 in labour costs.

  • What is the difference between in the alterations process between gowns purchased in "my size" vs. an off the rack/sample gown.

Surprisingly, less than you think! Most gowns will still need sides or the bust area taken in, waist or hip adjustments, a hem, and bustles to get your train off the ground at a minimum.

  • Can I bring guests to my fittings?

Absolutely! In order to keep this special time easy and stress-free, it’s recommended to do so at your final fitting where they can be shown the bustle and any tips and tricks for day of.

  • Do you charge rush fees?

No! But May-September are my busiest months so I am less likely to have the availability to take a gown that needs to be ready in less than a month. Please call to enquire!

  • Do I need shoes for my first appointment?

Unless your dress fits perfectly I usually don’t start pinning your hem til your second appointment. To give you an accurate quote at your initial appointment please bring shoes of a comparable heel height that you’ll be wearing on your wedding day.

  • Do you do customizations?

From lowering the back to detachable straps and even redesigning Mom’s vintage wedding dress, you provide the vision and I bring it to life!

  • Do I need a bustle?

If your wedding dress has a train (the fabric that follows behind you), then you will need a bustle. This helps preserve your gown as well as providing mobility during your reception. I will make sure your dress has a bustle you love the look of. I can do traditional bustles, french bustles, ballroom bustles, flat bustles, and wrist/finger loops. The type of bustle that works best will really depend on the style of your gown and its material.

  • But what if I lose weight!? Will my dress still fit?

This is a very common question when discussing the time frame of alterations and you are not to worry! Your dress will altered in steps over time, making adjustments when/ if necessary based on your body. Your final fittings is where all alterations are completed which should be scheduled a week or two before your wedding.
